Getting Around with Kids While Traveling

When it comes to getting around while traveling, I’ve learned a few tricks that make all the difference—especially when you're on the move with kids in tow!

1️⃣ Bassinet Seat on the Airplane
If you’re flying with a baby, book a bassinet seat! It’s a lifesaver on long-haul or overnight flights. It attaches to the wall, giving your baby a little bed to rest in. Always call the airline after booking to reserve this spot.  There are only a few on each plane so call in advance.
PRO TIP: This may be an unpopular opinion, but avoid pacing the aisles to entertain or soothe your child. It’s tempting, but it’ll make things harder in the long run! From a young age, only walk the aisles when you absolutely need to—like when heading to the lavatory. Constantly pacing the aisles not only means you’ll never get to rest, but it might also encourage your child to wander when you least expect it. Plus, extra people in the aisle can interfere with flight attendants and the smooth flow of service. The key is to set clear expectations early—if you don’t make it a habit, your child won’t even think it’s an option.

2️⃣ Rent a Car for Ultimate Flexibility
If you're not staying in a single city, consider renting a car.  This has saved me time and money. It’s often cheaper than train tickets and gives me the freedom to stop whenever I want for food, a roadside stretch sesh, or an amazing photo op.  If you didn’t follow my previous advice about packing light (hey, no judgment!), you can still make it work by using the car to store your larger suitcases—just make sure they’re out of sight. Use a small suitcase with your toiletries and changes of clothes for your time in each hotel. Leave your dirty laundry and the rest of your clothes in the bigger bags, and you’ll have much more flexibility going from hotel to hotel. This trick has made road trips so much easier and more organized for us!

3️⃣ Ubers and Public Transport in Cities
When we’re in cities, Ubers are a game-changer for strollers. Some subway stops don’t have elevators, and you’ll be grateful not to carry a stroller down those stairs! Just remember to bring the stroller with the car seat adaptor if your child needs one. If you have an older child who needs a booster seat, there are many options that inflate like this one from Hiccapop, or fold like this one from Mifold, or fit like a vest to hold the seat belt in place like this one from SafeRider.  These options can easily fit in your backpack or purse for traveling around town.

If you don’t need a stroller, public transportation is usually the quickest way around—and the locals are usually super helpful with directions.  Many larger cities also have transportation apps to help you determine the most efficient way to get from place to place.

I’ve learned that flexibility is key when traveling with kids. From booking the right seats to renting a car for more freedom, there are so many ways to make getting around smoother. So go ahead, take that adventure—you’ve got the tools to make it happen! 🌍🛣️
