Packing for International Travel with Small Kids

Traveling the world solo with my three little adventurers by my side is no easy feat, but if I can do it, anyone can! Here are some of my tips to help parents of small children pack like a pro for your international journeys:

1️⃣ Use a Convertible Stroller
Light and versatile, a stroller like the Nuna TRVL and PIPA Travel System fits in narrow airplane aisles and overhead compartments! If your child still needs a car seat, make sure you choose a stroller that has an adaptor compatible with your car seat so you can easily transition between Ubers, taxis, and rental cars. Less stress, more adventure.

2️⃣ Bring a Car Seat Bag
This universal car seat bag has backpack straps and extra space for overflow items—like coats in winter travel! I never carry the car seat to the gate; check it in with your other luggage to avoid lugging it through the airport.

3️⃣ Pack Light in Your Carryon
A backpack is your best friend when traveling with small ones. Stick to the essentials: a change of clothes, diapers, wipes, a few small toys, and an extra shirt for you in case of spills or sickness. Don't forget to pack all medications, including emergency medications (see my other post about travel medications) in your carry-on. Wheeled luggage is a no-go—it’ll just slow you down!   Trust me, you can do this.  If you don't trust me, try it first on a short domestic flight.  Make note of anything you couldn't live without and add it to your next long haul or international adventure.
NOTE: Airport security gives special clearance for baby medicine, milk, juice, water and food.  In fact, most airlines do not keep milk on the airplane so you must bring your own for your baby, just in case.  These items are not subject to the 3.4oz or 100mL.  However, you must communicate that they are for the baby or child when asked.  Also, for medications you may need a prescription.

4️⃣ Keep Your Checked Bag Simple
Pack clothes, shoes, toiletries, and a small amount of diapers and wipes to get you through the first few days. You don’t need much else! Unless you're going to a developing country, you can always find diapers and baby food when you arrive.  Packing light not only makes your life easier, but you will have extra room for any cool treasures you pick up along the way!

5️⃣ Remember the Oversize Luggage Carousel
Don’t forget to check the oversize luggage carousel for your car seat and other bulky items when you arrive. I’ve learned this lesson the hard way—standing around forever at the regular carousel before I realized!

6️⃣ Pack Light When You Head Out for the Day
Leave your big bag behind! The same backpack you took on the airplane with just diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes is all you need-- just make sure you replenish each day. You’ll be busy exploring, and you’ll want room in your stroller for shopping, not toys and a bunch of snacks. Challenge yourself to try local foods and let your kids experience the culture!

With these simple packing tips, you’ll be able to travel light, stress-free, and ready to take on any adventure with your little ones. You’ve got this! 🌟
